Black Hops launches equity crowdfunding campaign

Award-winning Gold Coast craft brewer Black Hops is opening up to investment through equity crowdfunding to fund its growth plans.

It is preparing to scale up its operations with a second production facility and taproom and plans interstate expansion.

Investors will soon have the chance to own a part of the champion craft brewer for as little as $50. Black Hops is raising up to $400,000 from investors through an equity crowdfunding offer with Birchal.

Dan Norris, co-founder of Black Hops, said: “We’ve been following the process for legalising equity crowdfunding for a few years. Now that it’s finally here, we are looking forward to being one of the first breweries to run a campaign, and the first to use equity crowdfunding to help fund the opening of a brewery.”

The Black Hops offer will feature investment rewards from $50 and up to $10,000 for retail investors. Investors will receive ordinary shares in the company and also be offered priority access to limited release beers as a reward.

“One of the best things about crowdfunding is how great it is at building up a group of advocates and followers,” Norris added. “We’ve done this since day one with our Black Hops Ambassadors.

“Backers are likely to be fans and advocates of your business and thrilled to be part of the action. And what better advocates for your company than the people who are prepared to buy a stake in it.

“We believe that equity crowdfunding is a great way for everyday drinkers of our beer to become investors and share in our future growth.”

The funds raised through the current equity crowdfunding campaign will go towards finishing Black Hops’ second brewing facility and taproom (in Biggera Waters), which is due for completion in early 2019.

“This is an opportunity for every day Aussies to own part of one of Australia’s fastest growing breweries,” Norris said.

The least covert operation in brewing

Back in 2014, Gold Coast mates, Dan Norris, Eddie Oldfield and Michael McGovern, had an idea for an eggnog stout. They came up with the name Black Hops, designed a logo and decided to document and share their journey every step of the way.

It’s been an epic journey so far. In 2015, Black Hops were called on by Activision, one of the largest game publishers on the planet, to brew the official beer for Call of Duty Black Ops III.

And in an Australian first, Black Hops launched their first brewery through a reward (i.e. non-investment based) crowdfunding campaign on Pozible (Birchal’s sister platform). Black Hops is the first business to follow-up a Pozible campaign with an equity crowdfunding campaign on Birchal.

True to their mission of absolute transparency, the Black Hops team released a book “Operation Brewery”, providing a tell-all account of their journey from an idea to one of the fastest growing craft breweries in Australia.

Black Hops’ Pale Ale debuted at number 20 in the GABS hottest 100 beers of 2017, and in 2018 the brewery was awarded Champion Small Australian Brewery at the AIBAs.
