“My tastes are simple. I’m easily satisfied with the best”

The Christmas and New Year sense of adventure sees average spend skyrocket and consumers exploring more premium, and sometimes rare Champagnes.

Is it the time of year that makes us lose our usual sensitivity to price? If that is the case, it’s nice to know you’re getting top quality when dipping into the ‘luxury compartment’ of the wallet.

The three Champagnes below fit the bill when looking for something more premium. They are simply elegant – displaying purity of fruit and freshness that signals a high quality product. As Winston Churchill said: “My tastes are simple. I’m easily satisfied with the best”.

Champagne Pol Roger Vintage 2004 – RRP: $150

Champagne Pol Roger is located on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay and was famously the Champagne of choice for Winston Churchill. The 2004 Brut Vintage from the house is a blend of Pinot Noir (60%) and (40%) Chardonnay – all sourced from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs. Produced in limited quantities, the 2004 was aged for eight years before being disgorged and released onto the market.

Many retailers have moved to the 2006 so this becomes even more special for that special celebration.

Champagne Taittinger Vintage 2008 – RRP: $160

The Taittinger Champagne house, circa 1734, sits atop some of the most impressive cellars (caves) in Reims – the wines disgorged within consistently display top end quality. As for the 2008 vintage – a blend of Chardonnay (50%) and Pinot Noir (50%) – this has been described as ‘the vintage of the decade’. Favourable growing conditions and the decision to lay the wine down for six years, allowing the maturity to develop slowly, has resulted in a complex Champagne with precision and elegance in equal measure.

Taittinger Comtes De Champagne 2006 – RRP:  $350

Affectionately and simply referred to as ‘Comte’, this Champagne is made 100% from Chardonnay (Blanc de Blanc) and represents a style that is the best the Champagne house produces. Comte is an iconic Champagne sitting among a select few with access to such high quality vineyards.

The 2006 vintage is smooth and creamy on the palate with wonderful texture. Beautiful fruit weight and length of palate – the blend of ripeness and freshness is exceptional. You get what you pay for, as long as you can get hold of some that is.
